Back acne, often called “bacne,” is a common skin issue that many people try to handle on their own. But dermatologists warn that popping pimples on the back can do more harm than good.
“The skin on the back is thicker than the face, and pimples there are often deeper,” explains Dr. Michael Tan, a dermatologist. “Squeezing them can push bacteria further under the skin, leading to painful infections, scarring, or dark spots that take months to fade.”
Instead of popping, experts recommend safer ways to manage back acne:
-
Shower after sweating: Sweat and bacteria can worsen acne if left on the skin.
-
Use gentle cleansers: Body washes with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can help unclog pores.
-
Exfoliate carefully: A soft scrub or chemical exfoliant once or twice a week prevents buildup, but avoid harsh scrubbing.
-
Wear breathable fabrics: Loose, cotton clothing helps reduce friction and irritation.
-
See a dermatologist: For severe or stubborn bacne, prescription treatments may be necessary.
Doctors stress that while bacne is frustrating, popping pimples isn’t the solution. “Patience and proper skin care are the key to clearer skin,” Dr. Tan says.
