Dermatologists Raise Awareness About Acne Breakouts Near the Armpit

Skin experts are drawing attention to a lesser-known but increasingly common issue — acne-like breakouts near the armpit area. While often mistaken for irritation or ingrown hairs, these bumps can be painful and persistent, sometimes signaling deeper skin concerns.

“Acne near the armpit usually develops due to sweat, friction, and bacteria buildup,” explains Dr. Natalie Brooks, a board-certified dermatologist. “Tight clothing, harsh deodorants, and poor hygiene after workouts can easily clog pores and inflame the skin.”

Because the underarm area is warm and moist, it creates an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. In some cases, these breakouts may actually be folliculitis (infected hair follicles) or hidradenitis suppurativa, a chronic condition that causes painful lumps and scarring.

Dermatologists recommend gentle cleansing with antibacterial or salicylic acid washes, avoiding strong deodorants with alcohol, and wearing loose, breathable fabrics. For recurring or painful bumps, professional evaluation is essential to prevent infection and long-term skin damage.

“Many people try to pop or squeeze these bumps, which can worsen inflammation,” Dr. Brooks warns. “With the right care and early treatment, underarm acne can heal properly and stay under control.”
