Dermatologists are warning that acne on the neck is an increasingly common issue, often overlooked compared to facial or back breakouts. Known as “neck acne,” these blemishes can be stubborn, painful, and difficult to treat due to the skin’s sensitivity in this area.
“Neck acne can be caused by the same factors as facial acne — clogged pores, excess oil, and bacteria — but friction from collars, ties, or even long hair can make it worse,” explains Dr. Amanda Reyes, a dermatologist in New York. “Sweat buildup and poor cleansing after workouts are also key contributors.”
Unlike facial acne, neck breakouts often appear as deeper nodules or cysts, which can be more painful and lead to noticeable scarring. Dermatologists caution against scratching or squeezing the lesions, as this can cause infection and dark spots.
Experts recommend gentle cleansing twice daily, avoiding heavy lotions or perfumes on the neck, and wearing breathable fabrics to reduce irritation. For persistent cases, treatments such as topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, or even oral medications may be necessary.
“Neck acne is more common than people realize,” Dr. Reyes adds. “Early treatment can help prevent long-term marks and restore confidence.”
