Back Acne Becoming a Growing Concern, Say Dermatologists

Health experts are warning about the increasing number of people struggling with acne on their backs, a condition widely referred to as “bacne.” While it often goes unnoticed under clothing, back acne can be painful, stubborn, and more difficult to manage than facial breakouts.

“Back acne develops when sweat, excess oil, and bacteria clog the pores, especially after workouts or during hot weather,” explains Dr. Rachel Lim, a dermatologist. “Because the skin on the back is thicker, the pimples are often larger and more inflamed, which increases the risk of scarring.”

Common triggers include tight or non-breathable clothing, heavy backpacks, poor post-exercise hygiene, and hormonal fluctuations. In many cases, bacne causes not only physical discomfort but also emotional stress, as patients feel embarrassed wearing open-back or light clothing.

Dermatologists recommend using body washes with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, showering promptly after sweating, and choosing loose, breathable fabrics. For more severe or persistent cases, prescription medications such as retinoids or oral antibiotics may be required.

“Back acne is treatable,” Dr. Lim emphasizes. “With consistent care and professional guidance, patients can reduce flare-ups and protect their skin from lasting marks.”
