Dermatologists are seeing a surge in patients dealing with acne on their backs — commonly known as “bacne.” While often hidden under clothing, back acne can be just as frustrating as facial breakouts, and in many cases, more severe.
“Back acne tends to form larger, deeper pimples because the pores on the back are bigger and more likely to trap oil and bacteria,” explains Dr. Karen Mitchell, a dermatologist in Chicago. “This makes flare-ups harder to control and more prone to scarring.”
The condition is often triggered by heavy sweating, tight or synthetic clothing, and lack of proper cleansing after workouts. Hormonal changes and stress also play a significant role. Many patients report that carrying backpacks or wearing sports gear worsens their symptoms by trapping heat and friction against the skin.
Treatment ranges from over-the-counter body washes with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to prescription oral medications for more severe cases. Regular exfoliation, breathable fabrics, and proper hygiene after exercise are also recommended preventive measures.
“Back acne can take a toll on confidence, especially in warm weather when people want to wear lighter clothing,” Dr. Mitchell adds. “But with the right approach, it can be effectively managed.”
