Dermatologists are observing a rise in acne breakouts on the shoulders — a condition often overlooked but increasingly common among both teens and adults. Known as “shoulder acne,” these blemishes can range from small whiteheads to painful, inflamed cysts that may leave lasting scars if untreated.
“Shoulder acne is typically caused by clogged pores, friction, and sweat buildup,” explains Dr. Hannah Lee, a board-certified dermatologist. “Tight clothing, heavy backpacks, and not showering promptly after exercise can trap oil and bacteria on the skin, leading to flare-ups.”
Experts add that hormonal changes, stress, and certain hair or body products can also contribute to shoulder acne. The area’s thicker skin and frequent contact with clothing make it more prone to irritation, which can worsen inflammation.
To prevent and manage shoulder acne, dermatologists recommend gentle exfoliation, using non-comedogenic cleansers or body washes with salicylic acid, and wearing breathable fabrics. In more severe cases, prescription treatments such as topical retinoids or oral antibiotics may be necessary.
“Many people don’t realize how common shoulder acne is,” Dr. Lee says. “With the right skincare routine and attention to hygiene, it’s entirely manageable and preventable.”
