Skin experts are drawing attention to an often-overlooked issue — acne or acne-like breakouts near the armpit area. Though not as common as facial or back acne, these bumps can be painful, persistent, and sometimes confused with other skin conditions.
“Breakouts near the armpit are often caused by friction, sweat, and bacteria trapped in the folds of the skin,” explains Dr. Olivia Carter, a board-certified dermatologist. “Tight clothing, deodorants with harsh ingredients, or improper hygiene after workouts can easily irritate the area and clog pores.”
Unlike typical acne, pimples in the underarm region may sometimes be related to folliculitis — inflammation of the hair follicles — or hidradenitis suppurativa, a chronic condition that requires medical attention. Because the area is warm and moist, it’s more prone to bacterial growth and inflammation.
Dermatologists recommend gentle cleansing, avoiding strong deodorants or antiperspirants with alcohol, and wearing loose, breathable fabrics. Applying topical treatments containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can help, but persistent or painful bumps should be evaluated by a dermatologist.
“Many people ignore armpit breakouts or mistake them for simple irritation,” Dr. Carter says. “Early care and proper hygiene can prevent infection and help the skin heal faster.”
