Dermatologists are seeing a noticeable increase in acne breakouts appearing on the neck — an area often overlooked in skincare routines but prone to irritation and clogged pores. Known as “neck acne,” this condition can be uncomfortable, persistent, and difficult to treat due to constant friction and sweat buildup.
“Neck acne often forms from the same causes as facial acne — excess oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells — but factors like tight collars, long hair, and sweat can make it worse,” explains Dr. Andrea Collins, a dermatologist based in New York. “The skin on the neck is also sensitive, which means it reacts more easily to irritation.”
Experts warn that perfume, makeup, and hair products can contribute to breakouts by clogging pores or causing inflammation. Hormonal changes and stress are also known to trigger neck acne flare-ups in both men and women.
To prevent and treat the condition, dermatologists recommend cleansing the neck daily, especially after sweating, avoiding heavy lotions or fragranced products, and wearing breathable fabrics. For more severe or recurring cases, topical treatments with salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or prescription retinoids may be needed.
“Neck acne is common, but often misunderstood,” Dr. Collins adds. “A consistent skincare routine and avoiding friction can make a huge difference in keeping the skin clear and healthy.”
