Painful Ear Acne Gains Attention: Dermatologists Explain the Causes

Dermatologists are warning about an increasing number of patients reporting acne breakouts inside or around the ears — a condition that can be both painful and difficult to treat due to the area’s sensitivity.

“Ear acne happens when oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria clog pores around the ear or even inside the ear canal,” explains Dr. Karen Simmons, a dermatologist based in Chicago. “Headphones, phone use, or even hair products can trap dirt and oil, creating the perfect environment for breakouts.”

Experts say ear acne often appears as small red bumps or whiteheads, but in some cases, deeper cystic pimples can form, causing tenderness and swelling. Because the ear area is delicate, popping or squeezing these pimples can lead to infection or damage to the skin.

To prevent ear acne, dermatologists recommend cleaning earbuds and headphones regularly, wiping the outer ear gently with mild cleansers, and avoiding oily hair or skincare products. Over-the-counter treatments containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide may help mild cases, but deeper pimples should be examined by a professional.

“Many people don’t realize that the skin around the ear is just as prone to acne as the rest of the face,” Dr. Simmons adds. “Proper hygiene and care can make a big difference in preventing painful flare-ups.”
