Acne in the Ear: Small Bumps, Big Discomfort

Dermatologists are drawing attention to an overlooked skin issue — acne inside or around the ears. Though less common than facial or back acne, these breakouts can be painful and difficult to treat due to the sensitive location.

“Ear acne usually develops when oil, sweat, and bacteria get trapped inside the ear canal or around the outer ear,” explains Dr. Julia Fernandez, a dermatologist in Miami. “Wearing headphones, frequent phone use, or not cleaning the ears properly can all contribute to flare-ups.”

Unlike typical pimples, acne in or around the ears often feels tender and can be aggravated by touching or pressing against the area. In some cases, clogged pores may develop into deeper cysts that require professional care.

Experts recommend gentle cleansing of the ear area, avoiding heavy oils or hair products that can drip into the skin, and regularly cleaning headphones and earbuds. For minor cases, over-the-counter treatments with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide may help, but dermatologists caution against inserting harsh chemicals or tools directly into the ear canal.

“If ear acne becomes persistent or extremely painful, it’s best to see a dermatologist,” Dr. Fernandez advises. “Early treatment prevents infection and reduces the risk of scarring in such a delicate area.”
