While acne commonly appears on the face, back, or chest, dermatologists are warning about a less common but often more sensitive issue — acne-like breakouts around the eyes. These small bumps or pimples can cause discomfort and are sometimes mistaken for other skin conditions, making proper diagnosis and treatment essential.
“Acne around the eyes is rare because the skin there is thinner and has fewer oil glands,” explains Dr. Melissa Chang, a board-certified dermatologist. “However, clogged pores, heavy makeup, poor cleansing, or certain skincare products can still lead to breakouts in this delicate area.”
Experts say these blemishes often appear as tiny white or red bumps and may be linked to milia, blocked hair follicles, or irritation from rubbing the eyes. In some cases, what looks like acne could also be a sign of conditions like styes or dermatitis, which require different treatments.
Because the skin near the eyes is sensitive, dermatologists strongly advise against popping or squeezing the bumps. Instead, they recommend gentle cleansing, using non-comedogenic eye creams, and avoiding heavy, oil-based makeup. For persistent or painful cases, professional evaluation is essential to rule out infection or underlying skin disorders.
“Any breakout near the eyes should be treated with caution,” Dr. Chang warns. “With the right care and an accurate diagnosis, most cases can be resolved safely and effectively.”
